Sometimes, the best stories begin where you least expect them — in a casino on a Thursday afternoon in Polanco.

I was invited to photograph at Casino Infiniti, located at Anatole France 120, Polanco, Miguel Hidalgo, 11550 CDMX, for their Día de los Muertos celebration. The manager called me and said:

“We’re planning something special — our employees will have professional makeup inspired by Catrinas, and we want portraits to celebrate and promote the event. Can you bring your studio here?”

Of course, I said yes.

I arrived around 4:30 p.m. with lights, softboxes, and backdrops — basically, my entire studio on wheels. The casino was full of energy; makeup artists were finishing up beautiful designs on each employee.

Around 5:30 p.m., the portraits started.

“Okay, mira acá… shoulders down, good posture, big smile — perfecto!” I’d say, in my usual Spanglish mix, while testing the lights. They laughed, I laughed — the ice was broken.

Some of them were initially shy.

“Todo bien, no worries, I got you. Let’s make you look like a movie star,” I’d tell them.

Others were completely ready for the spotlight.

“Un poquito más chin up, sí, así… perfecto. Give me that confident look — imagine you just won the jackpot!”

Soon, everyone was relaxed and having fun. A few employees even returned for extra photos — “Cristian, otra, por favor!” — because they enjoyed the experience so much.

The manager told me that they have three Catrinas (one man, two women) later on. They are all professional models, dressed as Catrinas with detailed makeup. The atmosphere was anything but casino-like. The leadership of the casino managed to beautifully organize tradition with elegance, demonstrating their efforts to respect Mexican culture. Congratulations!

I wrapped up around 8:30 p.m. after four hours of shooting — individual, duo, and group portraits. The manager was thrilled, the employees left smiling, and Casino Infinity now has a collection of professional portraits that celebrate both their team and Mexican culture.
