Chapultepec Family Session | Family Photographer in CDMX

Capturing family memories during a family session in Mexico City is about more than finding a beautiful park—it’s about adapting to the light and the energy of the moment. This particular session took place around noon, when sunlight is strongest and shadows are most pronounced. Rather than avoiding it, we embraced the light. Because I knew the sun would create challenges for posing the family, a stand and an off-camera flash complemented some of the shots.

My clients were visiting from the United States and staying at the JW Marriott in Polanco. They wanted portraits that mixed a taste of Mexican culture with a fun outdoor experience.

We chose Bosque de Chapultepec, one of the largest city parks in the world, because it seamlessly blends open green spaces with shade from tall trees—perfect for managing midday light while allowing children to play freely.

Why Choose Chapultepec and the Gandhi Statue?

Chapultepec Park—the “lungs” of Mexico City—covers over 866 hectares of trees, trails, and museums. On its northern edge, near Polanco, stands the Monument to Mahatma Gandhi. This bronze sculpture honoring the Indian leader sits along Calzada Mahatma Gandhi, surrounded by soft lawns and filtered light.

At noon, the tree canopy creates pockets of shade ideal for portraits (see my entire family portraits portfolio here). Just a short walk away, Parque Gandhi and Juegos Infantiles Parque Tamayo offer colorful playgrounds where kids can explore between shots. Families love this corner of Polanco because it combines culture, greenery, and the joyful noise of city life.

Planning a Family Session in Chapultepec Park

Shooting at noon means working with the light rather than fighting it. I scouted the park the day before to locate shaded trails, textured backgrounds, and reflective surfaces that would soften the bright sun.

Before the session, the father and I coordinated details. Because their hotel was close, they walked over with the kids and a small bag of essentials—snacks, water, and toys. I reminded them that patience is key: children respond better when they can play first and pose later.

The bright midday light brought vivid colors to life—the green leaves and yellow playground rails became part of the story. We took breaks under the trees and used benches and concrete edges for seated portraits that kept everyone comfortable.

A Stroll Through Polanco’s Green Heart

We met near the Gandhi Statue. The parents stood side by side, holding their children while sunlight filtered through the branches. Then we crossed to Parque Tamayo, where the older child climbed slides and the baby enjoyed the swings.

Midday sessions have a special rhythm—fast moments of laughter, quick shade breaks, and an easy flow that keeps everyone engaged. I captured candid frames of the parents laughing, the siblings, and the father lifting his son high against the bright sky.

The light created crisp, modern images with deep contrast—a reminder that every hour of the day has its own beauty. By the time we wrapped up, the family felt relaxed and energized, happy to have turned a simple noon outing into lasting memories.

Why Work With a Local Professional

Working with a professional family photographer in Mexico City means understanding how to shape light, anticipate weather, and plan around the city’s rhythm. Midday shoots require both timing and creativity—finding shaded corners, positioning families under tree canopies, or using reflective walls to eliminate the shadows.

I approach every family session as a walk in the park—literally and figuratively. I guide gently, encourage play, and adapt to each child’s unique personality. I never force a photoshoot on a child who isn’t having their best day; it’s part of my own personal code of ethics. After the session, I carefully edit each image to balance highlights and tones, creating a consistent, natural look across every photograph.

The goal is always the same: portraits that feel real, personal, and full of life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time for a family session in Chapultepec?

Morning and late afternoon are softer, but even midday can work with a creative setup and plenty of shade.

What should we wear for a noon photo session?

Light, breathable fabrics in soft tones photograph best under bright light.

Since the predominant color in the park is green, the complementary color to green is red, as they are directly opposite each other on the color wheel, creating high contrast. Other colors that complement green well include neutral tones such as white, black, gray, and beige, as well as analogous colors like blue and yellow.

How long does a session last?

Most sessions run one to two hours, giving time for portraits, play, and short breaks in the shade.

Do you photograph families outside Chapultepec?

Yes, I cover most of the iconic places in Mexico City—from Polanco’s parks and private residences to the Zócalo.
