Diving into headshot photography is one of the best decisions I ever made as a photographer in Tokyo. Creating a business or LinkedIn portrait is a personal and intimate process for everyone. Guiding you through the whole process and making you feel safe and confident is my top priority.
In this blog post, you will be reading about the following:
- What is headshot photography?
- Why is it essential to hire the right professional headshot photographer for you?
What is headshot photography?
In short, headshots are closeup portraits, with the most significant difference being that the focus is on the person’s face. The term is usually applying nowadays to photos used for online media, generally in digital format. The primary purpose of the images is for online use on a lot of social media platforms like LinkedIn, corporate websites, to mention a few.
Having a professional headshot image on your CV (curriculum vitae) can make or break a great impression. As with all things, it is essential to consider the use of the photos and create the looks that best suit your needs. As a professional photographer in Tokyo, I always coach my clients about dos and don’ts.
If you’re wondering who it is for, well: the headshots photography is for everyone, either because most of us need it, or simply because we deserve it. From cute babies to students, professionals of all kinds, photographers (😎), you name it, at some point in time, we all need a headshot.
I genuinely believe every person should have a professional headshot readily available to use whenever is necessary. From a young age, we all have diplomas, official documents where a fantastic portrait will only complement our distinctions (where permitted by formal requirements).
Don’t get me started with the dull portraits authorities demand for driver licenses, ID’s, passports, etc. I hope I’m not the only one who thinks those can be improved while retaining the identification parameters.
Hiring the right headshot photographer in Tokyo
As important as the final headshot images, it is also the experience. Studio sessions for headshot photography can be intimidating for many people, and my job is to help you out with the best, comfortable, and enjoyable experience.
According to my research and experience as a professional photographer, most people will feel uncomfortable before any given photo shoot. Please read the article I wrote about the five most common reasons people feel uncomfortable during photography sessions.
No matter the circumstances, I am prepared to help you out every step of the process during the headshot photography session. As a person, I am incredibly self-conscious. Therefore, I know a thing or two from my experience to bring ease for those who may have concerns.
At the moment I shoot headshot sessions in my home studio which is a Japanese tatami room. The experience during the shoot is one very personal and I count on the intimacy of it, making things easier for everyone involved.

I believe in the coffee had before the shoot (ok, sometimes I drink tea, water, or juice to avoid having my heart exploded because of too much caffeine intake), which in the case of the studio shoots is a coffee I make with my own hands. Starting the discussion with something a lot of us love-coffee, is an essential step to loosen up.
I start with an introduction of the space while grinding of the fresh beans from Starbucks, needed to make the espresso shot, and continue until I finish foaming the milk for a delicious cappuccino, courtesy of Delonghi Japan.
By the time we finish drinking out the coffees, I already have you gone the second time through all the steps needed for a complete successful headshot photography session. I put a lot of effort into making you as comfortable as possible because I have a deep belief that you deserve the best experience with me.
Of course, I want you back as a returning client; therefore, your happiness is not optional. Even better, bring over your family and friends for a fantastic experience during a headshot photography session.
If you are representing a company, I’ll be glad to travel anywhere in Tokyo with my portable studio equipment to create the desired headshots for your entire company.
