Studio headshots for a Second Officer | Photographer in Manila

The other day Alex contacted me for a few professional headshots to update his LinkedIn profile while he was on vacation in Manila. It was my first time as a professional headshot photographer to shoot a second officer wearing the official sailor’s attire, including the epaulets.

I had no idea what that meant, so I Googled the term:

“The second officer plays a crucial role in ensuring smooth sailing and maintaining the ship’s navigational integrity. They are the go-to person for all things related to navigation, charts, and software management. Their primary responsibility is overseeing the navigation systems and radio equipment, ensuring everything is in working order.”

Hi will you be open in Manila in May? I need a professional LinkedIn photo doing. Thanks.

Alex

When Alex contacted me, a few trips were already set, and one was due to go to Dumaguete, one of the many islands of the Philippines. Here’s my answer to his request:

Hello Alex,

Thank you for reaching out. I’m hoping you will have a great time here in Manila.

I will be available for most of May, except from the 5th to the 8th, when I will be traveling. Availability is subject to change, depending on the projects I must complete, and I offer limited daily headshot sessions. Note that you’ll need to pay a deposit to secure your booking.

Please note that I shoot studio portraits in my living room at the moment (and probably in May, too). Don’t worry; it’s a prime location near the Bonifacio High Street (Bonifacio Global City), on the **st floor.

What dates are you going to be in Manila? I’d love to know how did you find my website.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Because of our schedules, the only fit was on his departure day to Palawan(it might have been Cebu, but who keeps the chronological order?).

Considering that he was a tourist here, I advised him to schedule the headshot studio session a couple of hours earlier to have some time to spare for the hazardous traffic in Manila.

Having previous experience sitting in the car for one hour and a half on the way to Ninoy Aquino International Airport, it was crucial to set the photo shoot in a manner that Alex would have time to reach his flight in time.

Helpful tips for tourists and travelers while in Manila

Since I knew that Alex is on vacation here, I thought it would be helpful to share a few tips to stay safe while here, especially tip #10:

  1. Safety: Manila is a large city with some areas that can be dangerous, especially at night. It is essential to avoid isolated areas, not carry valuable items(watches, bracelets, etc.), and be aware of your surroundings.
  2. Traffic: Manila has some of the worst traffic in the world, especially during rush hours. Plan your trips carefully and allow extra time to get to your destination.
  3. Weather: Manila has a tropical climate with high humidity and frequent rain showers. Wear lightweight clothing and an umbrella to prepare for hot and humid weather.
  4. Food: Manila has a diverse food scene with local delicacies such as adobo, lechon, and sisig. Be adventurous and try the local cuisine, but avoid “cheap” places if you have a sensitive stomach.
  5. Currency: The Philippine Peso (PHP) is used in Manila. It is advisable to exchange your currency at authorized money changers or banks and have change and small bills most of the time(sometimes people will not have “change” for your big bills 😉 ). Card payments are usually acceptable at shopping malls but be prepared for payments not to go through for various reasons.
  6. Transportation: Manila has various modes of transportation, such as buses, jeepneys, taxis, and ride-sharing services. You can negotiate the fare before you get in a cab or ride-sharing vehicle. Avoid taxis and use Grab instead (similar to taxis, just with better conditions and safe to use). Grab is available to order via the Grab app, or the hotel/colleagues could help. Payable via cash or through the app.
  7. Attractions: Manila has many tourist attractions, such as historical sites, museums, and shopping centers. Research and plan your itinerary.
  8. Etiquette: Filipinos are generally friendly and hospitable people. Show respect for their culture and customs by observing proper etiquette, such as saying “po” and “opo” when speaking to elders and using utensils during meals.
  9. Hygiene: Be mindful of hygiene practices, such as washing your hands frequently and carrying hand sanitizer. Tap water is not always safe to drink, so stick to bottled water.
  10. Review my services: I would love it if you could leave me a review after you receive the photos.

Now, you might be thinking, “A studio photographer without a studio?” Finding the perfect space for my studio in or near Bonifacio Global City has proven to be a challenging task. But don’t worry, my living room is located in a high-end building near Bonifacio High Street, with top-notch security.

After a few more email exchanges, I learned that Ben was seeking a professional headshot in a relaxed and casual attire suitable for his workplace. He had prepared multiple outfits for the photo session, ensuring various photos would meet his needs. Who knows, he may be updating his LinkedIn profile, too.

During the session, we also took a moment to enjoy a virtual coffee “together.” While Ben posed in front of the camera, I worked diligently in the background, capturing more headshots and portraits.

The blue background is the result of post-processing the images. Using colored gels, I can create many different background colors.

Stay tuned; I will dive into the headshot session and reveal valuable tips and insights for achieving stunning results.

Tips for better headshots during the studio session

“A 1-hour session may seem short, but maintaining a smile for an extended period can be pretty tiring. That’s why I plan the hour with some breaks in mind, although sometimes I get carried away and must remind myself to take them.

During the first 20 minutes of the session, I prioritize chit-chatting with my clients. This allows us to get to know each other better while I take test shots to fine-tune the studio lights. You might wonder why the lights aren’t already set up, and that’s a valid question. While I test all the lights before my clients arrive, the final light setup often depends on different heights and face types, which may require micro-adjustments to highlight or minimize certain facial or body features.

After all, my goal is to make you look your absolute best in the headshots I create. That’s why attention to detail is crucial.

Creating a relaxed atmosphere is essential because, let’s be honest, it’s not every day that you find yourself in front of a stranger, smiling while they capture your photos. It’s an experience outside the norm, and it’s natural to feel a bit of pressure involuntarily. But fear not; it’s my job to ensure your comfort, aside from capturing beautiful photos. I understand that it will reflect in the final shots if you’re not at ease.

Understanding the importance of creating a comfortable atmosphere for my clients, I asked Ben about his favorite musician and played one of their most popular albums during the shoot. This small gesture helped set the mood and made the experience more enjoyable for him. It’s these personal touches that make a difference.

Since we’re not robots, I keep the conversation flowing throughout the session. In fact, I go to great lengths to keep it engaging, even to the point where you might start wondering if it needs to be more exciting. But this serves a purpose. By redirecting your focus away from the task at hand, I help alleviate any self-consciousness or nervousness you may have, allowing your true personality to shine through.

Studio portrait in front of grey background for a bearded man

In addition to the conversation, I may also play some music to create a pleasant ambiance. Music has a way of setting the mood and helping you relax even further. Before the session, we can discuss your preferred genre or artist, ensuring that the soundtrack enhances your overall experience.

Remember, the key to capturing authentic and captivating headshots lies in capturing your genuine self. So, I encourage you to embrace the process, let loose, and trust that together we’ll create images that truly represent you.

Conclusion

In conclusion to this blog post, I hope I’ve provided valuable insights into what goes on behind the scenes of a headshot session (read here how to choose the right photographer for you). From the initial contact to creating a comfortable environment, I aim to ensure that your experience is enjoyable and that the resulting headshots truly reflect your best self.

You can book a session with me if you need professional headshots that make a lasting impression. Whether you’re an aspiring actor, a corporate professional, or someone looking to enhance your online presence, I’m here to capture your unique personality and help you stand out from the crowd.

Don’t hesitate to contact me through my website, and let’s collaborate and create headshots that make a difference in your professional life.

Thank you for taking the time to read this blog post, and I look forward to the opportunity of working with you soon!

Studio photographer in Metro Manila (NCR) | Mobile Studio

As a studio photographer based in Manila, I’m excited to share my experiences and stories about how I helped previous clients, sometimes by visiting clients’ locations with my mobile studio.

Firstly, let me tell you a little bit about what I do. As a studio photographer, my main job is to capture beautiful, high-quality portraits in a controlled indoor environment. This means I must be very mindful of the lighting and posing techniques I use to create stunning and flattering images of my clients.

Manila studio photographer

When people think of studio photography, they often think of stiff, formal poses and bland, dull lighting. But that couldn’t be further from the truth! As a professional studio photographer, I use a variety of different techniques to create dynamic and engaging portraits that truly capture my clients’ personalities.

One of my clients wanted a studio session to preserve her look in images and remember the most iconic period of her life when she looked the best and had a prolific career surrounded by success.

I believe preserving one’s likeness in photographs can serve as an excellent example for future generations. When we take pictures, we capture a moment in time that can never be repeated. These images tell stories of our past, and by preserving them, we can show future generations what life was like during our time.

By preserving our photographs, we can teach our children and grandchildren about our lives, values, beliefs, and how we lived. They can see the world through our eyes and better understand our experiences. We can show them our achievements, struggles, joys, and sorrows.

Preserving our photographs is also an opportunity to pass down family history and traditions. We can show future generations where we came from, how we grew up, and how our family has evolved. It is a way to keep our memories alive and ensure that they will not be forgotten.

Corporate Headshots Photographer in Manila

One of the essential aspects of studio photography is lighting. Using artificial lighting, I create various moods and styles in my portraits. For example, if I’m shooting headshot portraits for LinkedIn or corporate headshots, I’ll use a soft, diffused light to create a clean, professional look.

On the other hand, if I’m shooting a more creative portrait, I might use dramatic, high-contrast lighting to create a more edgy and dynamic feel. The key is to adapt to each client’s needs and create a look that truly reflects their unique personality and style. In the example below, the young engineer living away from his home country wanted a photograph to showcase his origins and traditions.

Studio photography in BGC

Another important aspect of studio photography is posing. I always take the time to work with my clients to find flattering and natural poses while also conveying the right message for their particular needs. Whether working with models, business professionals, or families, I always strive to make my clients feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.

Creative Studio Photography.

Before all studio photography sessions, my clients answer a couple of questions to make me understand what they need or desire. Discussing in detail about posing ideas, mood, and usage intent for the photos will ensure final images that complement everyone’s expectations.

Ultimately, as a studio photographer, my job is to help my clients look and feel their best. Whether they’re looking for headshot portraits for LinkedIn or something more creative and expressive, I’m always here to help them achieve their goals and capture beautiful images they can treasure for a lifetime.

I have good news if you want to hire a professional studio photographer but lack time to go to a local studio. In that case, I can bring my mobile studio anywhere in Metro Manila, and I only need space available 45 minutes before the shooting time to install the necessary equipment.

I’d be honored to discuss your needs and see how we can work together to create some truly stunning portraits. Thank you for reading.

How to choose the ideal photographer in Manila for your needs?

How to choose the ideal photographer in Manila for your needs?

I’m glad you’re considering hiring a professional photographer in Manila for your photography needs. Choosing the right photographer can be daunting, but finding someone who understands your vision and can capture your moments beautifully is crucial.

Table of contents:

Determine your needs and style

The first step in choosing the right photographer is determining your needs and style. Do you need a photographer in Manila for a family portrait, a commercial event, or a business headshot? Each type of photography requires unique skills, equipment, and experience. For example, a family photo session requires capturing the couple’s emotions, or a child’s play, while a commercial event needs a more formal and precise approach.

Corporate Headshots Photographer in Manila

Once you have identified your needs, it’s time to consider your style. Do you prefer traditional or candid shots? Formal or casual? Colorful or black and white? Do you need a studio photographer? A good photographer should be able to adapt to your preferred style and offer suggestions to enhance your images.

However, consulting a few photographers’ portfolios should answer the questions above, especially because some will have a set style and may want to stay within a specific territory, which leads to the next point.

Look at their portfolio

A photographer’s portfolio is the best way to gauge their skills, style, and experience. Please look at their website, social media profiles, and blog to see their work. Look for images that match your style and needs. Pay attention to the quality and consistency of their work. Can they capture the emotions and details in a way that resonates with you?

Ballet Photography, Photographer in Manila

A photographer’s portfolio should showcase their versatility, creativity, and ability to capture their clients’ unique personalities and stories. If you’re looking for a wedding photographer, check if they have experience shooting in different locations and lighting conditions. If you’re looking for a family portrait photographer, check if they can capture the essence of your family in a natural and candid way.

Quality-grade photography

An important aspect to understand is that there’s a big difference between quality-grade photography and photos that look good.

Quality-grade photography is produced with attention to detail, technical skill, artistic vision, and professional camera gear; most of the time with a second backup professional camera. It involves careful composition, lighting, and post-production editing to create an image that looks good and conveys a message or tells a story.

Photos that look good, on the other hand, may be aesthetically pleasing but need more depth and technical excellence of quality-grade photography, which can be seen on a computer’s screen or in actual printed photos. They may be snapshots taken with a smartphone or point-and-shoot(or entry-level consumer cameras) camera showing their limitations once you print those images(remember those pixelated images?).

An important tip is to ask for a couple of images in the format and size they will deliver to an actual client. If you wonder why there is a simple explanation: all social networks optimize the pictures in such a severe way that will make the photos look far away from the actual files.

For example, on my website, I have made some mistakes using the wrong software to optimize the images for speed, to load faster for people who don’t have a fast internet speed. That helped with my website loading time but diminished how the photos looked. I know this doesn’t sound very easy, and it has nothing to do with photographer skills but with the company that makes the website.

Read their reviews and testimonials

Reading reviews and testimonials from previous clients is an excellent way to gauge the photographer’s quality of work and customer service. Look for photographers with a proven track record of delivering high-quality work and excellent customer service. Reading reviews will also give you an idea of how easy they are to work with and if they can accommodate your specific needs. In my case, I have asked my past clients to provide me feedback on my Facebook page; you can read them all here.

https://cristianbucurphotography.wordpress.com/testimonials/

Additionally, if you want to go out of your way, you can ask for references from previous clients and check if they are satisfied with the photographer’s work. A good photographer will be fine providing you with references and examples of their happy clients, although this is an extreme requirement. Their Facebook page or Google Maps entry should suffice 99.9% of the time.

Schedule a consultation

Once you have narrowed your search, schedule a consultation with the desired photographer. This will give you an opportunity to discuss your needs, style, and vision and ask them about their experience and process. A good photographer will take the time to understand your requirements and offer suggestions to ensure your images are stunning.

I always encourage my potential clients to meet, at least virtually, via a video call. I know that time comes at a premium nowadays, but it is much better and more productive during the photo shoot if we already “know each other.”

During the consultation, ask the photographer about their shooting approach, equipment, and post-processing techniques. Ask them about the number of photos you can expect, the turnaround time, and how they deliver their final product. A good photographer should be able to answer all your questions and provide you with a clear understanding of their process.

My work etiquette dictates the existence of a contract, as it should be, mainly because I have a bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Law. I prepare all the details mentioned above in a contract, and all parties involved sign before starting the photography session or event.

Consider the cost

The cost of a photographer is an important consideration, but it should not be the only factor. Remember, you get what you pay for. While sticking to your budget is important, don’t compromise on quality. Good photography is an investment that you will cherish for years to come.

Event photography for the Swedish Chamber of Commerce by Cristian Bucur photographer in Manila

When comparing prices, make sure you understand what’s included in the package. Some photographers will have additional fees, such as printing charges, retouching, or travel expenses. Ensure you understand the contract’s terms and conditions, including cancellation policies and payment terms.

Since photography is a luxury service, expect it not to be cheap. Most photographers in Manila won’t be able to shoot 8(eight) hours a day, 5(five) days a week, but they all should be able to make a living like any other professionals.

In conclusion, finding the right photographer in Manila may take some time and research, but it’s worth the effort. Remember to identify your needs and style, look at their portfolio, read their reviews and testimonials, schedule a consultation, and only then decide. With these tips, you can hire your ideal photographer in the Philippines.

Professional headshot photographer in Bonifacio Global City

Professional headshot photographer in Bonifacio Global City

Hi there! My name is Cristian Bucur, a headshot photographer based in Bonifacio Global City. After moving here, it took a while to start to shoot professionally again after a brief hiatus. The Philippines is such a beautiful place, and I was eager to capture it in my photographs.

Table of contents:

Why did I start taking portraits?

My journey in photography started in 2009 after a funny occurrence: I got photobombed. I found myself drawn to capturing moments through the lens of my camera, and it quickly became a passion of mine. Over time, I honed my skills and learned how to capture the essence of people and places in my photographs.

Why do you need a professional headshot to represent yourself?

Well, having a professional picture on your online job application or LinkedIn profile is super important. It can significantly affect how potential employers or connections perceive you.

Think about it: if you’re trying to land a job or make valuable connections, you want to present yourself in the best possible light. And a high-quality, professional picture can do just that. It shows that you take yourself seriously and are willing to invest in yourself and your career.

Plus, a good headshot can help you stand out from the crowd. In a sea of faceless profiles and generic headshots selfies, having a unique and engaging photo can help you make a great first impression. And let’s be honest; first impressions are everything when it comes to job hunting and networking.

To sum it up, having a professional picture on your online job application or LinkedIn profile can give you a real edge. It shows that you’re serious about your career, that you’re willing to invest in yourself, and that you’re someone worth paying attention to. So if you haven’t already, go ahead and book your studio session!

When I moved to Bonifacio Global City, I was eager to put my skills to the test and start shooting professionally again. My first client was a corporate executive who needed a new headshot to update her LinkedIn profile.

What type of studio images can I craft?

At the moment, I have to set up a makeshift studio in my living room(luckily, I live in a large condo with a nice view from the 41st floor). Installing all the professional lighting equipment and shooting professionally again felt terrific. I’m always amazed and honored by my clients’ trust in my skills. Being able to help my client put his best foot forward with a polished and professional image is my absolute goal.

I offer limited corporate headshot sessions because I am a freelance photographer and a “stay-home dad,” which requires a lot of my time to nurture my daughter’s growth.

Additionally, I make creative portraits in my home studio to complement and feed the need of people to have their likeness captured differently, in harmony with their desires.

How can my photography help you?

Suppose you’re looking to take your pictures to the next level. In that case, a dedicated camera used by a professional photographer can help you receive high-quality images that a phone selfie can’t match.

More control over settings like aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and lighting, will make your photos stand out. Working with a photographer will ensure the perfect lighting, angle, and composition to showcase your best features and capture the mood you’re going for.

Plus, high-quality images can make a big difference if you use them for professional purposes like a website, social media, marketing materials, or LinkedIn profile. It can help you stand out from the crowd and make a strong impression on potential clients, customers, or employers.

Who will receive an interview call between two applications, one with a selfie or a professionally crafted headshot?

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with a good old phone selfie if you want to capture a quick moment or share a casual snapshot with friends. But suppose you want to take your personal branding to the next level. In that case, I recommend exploring your options with a  professional photographer.

What if you use a selfie for your LinkedIn (instead of an image created by a professional photographer)?

Using a selfie for your LinkedIn profile picture is definitely not the best idea. Still, it’s not the end of the world either. While a professional headshot is ideal, I understand that not everyone has access to one or the budget to get one done.

That being said, a selfie can come across as unprofessional and give off the wrong impression to potential employers or clients. It’s important to remember that LinkedIn is a professional networking site, so you want to make sure your profile picture reflects that.

If you absolutely have to use a selfie, make sure it’s a good one! Take it in good lighting, make sure you’re dressed professionally and use a simple background. And try to avoid any filters or overly edited photos; the latter is meant to entertain your family and friends.

I suggest investing in a professional headshot where a photographer takes a picture of you. It may seem like a small detail, but your profile picture can have a big impact on your first impression; if you get that job you’re dreaming of, you’ll get a return on your investment many times over.

My goals

My portrait business is in a growth period. Settling in takes time and energy. I know shooting in my living room is not a sustainable long-term solution. I have been searching for a suitable place to rent for my studio. Unfortunately, I have yet to have much luck so far. Let me know if you have any insights on this.

Despite the setbacks, I remain determined to find a studio space that will allow me to continue to grow my business and serve my clients to the best of my ability. I can see the perfect studio and take my photography to new heights with perseverance and hard work.

In the meantime, I will continue to shoot anywhere in Metro Manila, whether in my living room or location. One of the things that I enjoy most about photography is its versatility – I can shoot anywhere and capture the beauty of any moment or scene.

In addition to corporate professional headshots, I enjoy shooting family portraits and corporate events. There is something magical about capturing a person’s personality or the energy of an event in a photograph. I love being able to freeze those moments in time.

Corporate Event photographer BGC

As a photographer, I am constantly learning and growing. I attend workshops and seminars to stay current on the latest techniques and trends and always experiment with new ideas and concepts in my photography.

Ultimately, I aim to help my clients feel confident and proud of their professional images. I know that a great photograph can make all the difference in how someone is perceived, and I take that responsibility seriously.

So whether I’m shooting in my living room or out on location, I always strive to capture the beauty and essence of my subjects in my photographs. I am excited about what the future holds for me and my photography business, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me next.

Why a Great Headshot Matters

In today’s digital age, your online presence is often the first point of contact between you and potential clients, employers, or colleagues- this means that having a great headshot is essential for making a solid first impression.

A high-quality photograph can help you appear more professional, approachable, and trustworthy. It can also help you stand out from the competition and make a lasting impression on those who view your profile.

Benefits of Working with a Professional Studio Headshot Photographer

While there are many online tools and resources available for creating portraits, there are several key benefits to working with a professional photographer. If you are uncomfortable in front of a camera, read this article where I explain how to overcome “camera shy” situations.

First and foremost, a professional photographer has the skills, expertise, and equipment needed to create a high-quality image that accurately reflects your unique personality and style. They also have a keen eye for detail and understand how to use lighting, posing, and other techniques to create a visually stunning image.

Studio Headshot BGC

Additionally, working with a professional allows you to receive personalized service tailored to your specific needs. They take the time to get to know you, understand your goals and objectives, and create an image that looks great and reflects who you are and what you stand for.

The Process of Creating a Great Headshot

At my [home-temporary, until I rent a suitable place] studio, creating a great portrait starts with getting to know you and understanding your specific needs and goals- this allows me to create a shoot tailored to your unique style and preferences.

Before the shoot, we will discuss wardrobe options, makeup, and other details to ensure that you look and feel your best. We will also discuss the style and tone of the image to ensure that it accurately reflects your professional brand.

Corporate studio headshot with a black background in Bonifacio Global City

During the shoot, I will use professional equipment and the latest techniques to create a stunning image that is both professional and approachable. I will guide you through the posing and ensure that the lighting is just proper to create an image that is both visually remarkable and authentic to who you are.

After the shoot, you will receive a selection of images to choose from your favorites. We will then work together to select the best images and make any necessary retouching adjustments to ensure that the final product is polished and professional.

In addition to providing top-notch photography services, I also offer retouching services to ensure that the final product is polished and professional- this includes adjusting colors, removing blemishes, and other minor edits to ensure the final image is both striking and natural-looking.

Conclusion
